    Date: Monday, July 06, 2009

police hat Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Peter Bunting, is strongly condemning the shooting murder of Police Sergeant Rudolph Morris, who was killed last night.

“All Jamaica should be deeply disturbed by this vicious slaying. Yet another of our servicemen has had his life snuffed out at the hands of lawless cowards with guns” Mr. Bunting said.

He continued in saying “the circumstances appear to be so ordinary that they rob us of the freedom to go about our regular business as citizens without suspecting every person around us as wanting to take our lives. It is an even grimmer picture for the men and women of our Police Force, who, like Sergeant Morris, have undertaken the duty to protect us.”

According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) Sergeant Morris of the Hunts Bay Police Station was shot dead by gunmen at his business establishment at Eastwood Park Road, Kingston 10 last night at about 8:45. The men had entered the building, ordered cigarettes and left. They then returned, pulled handguns and opened fire hitting Sergeant Morris several times. He died on the spot.

Bunting adds that “the government needs to make a concerted effort to bring crime under control, in general, but particular to get guns out of the hands of lawbreakers and to have the full extent of the law come to bear upon those who are caught.”

The Opposition offers condolences to the Sergeant Morris’ family and fellow officers as they grieve his loss. The Opposition is calling on members of the public to offer any assistance they can in bring the gunmen to justice by contacting the Half-Way Tree C.I.B. or Crime Stop at 3-1-1.
